 Literature

I used the Western University Libraries Online Database and the tool Mendeley to find articles. In my search I included combinations of phrases and keywords that included: medical students; undergraduate medical education; empathy; physician empathy; narrative approach; interpersonal skills training and experiential learning. Similar to a study from Batt-Rawden (2013), I, “defined the concepts of undergraduate medical education and empathy using a combination of controlled vocabulary terms applicable to each database and keyword terms and phrases” (p. 1172). All the studies are peer-reviewed and include qualitative/quantitative designs, as well as, other literature reviews. Throughout my research, I came frequently came across three educational interventions including:

1. Narratives

2. Interpersonal Skills Training

3. Experiential Learning

I decided to focus on these three approaches by selecting seven articles on each pedagogical practice and have highlighted two for each approach on this project website.
